From the Jobsite to the Classroom: Anthony LaFata shares his journey
Students in the technology education program at North Branford High School recently had the opportunity to hear directly from someone living the realities of the excavating industry every day. Anthony LaFata, owner of LaFata & Son, visited the classroom to provide a firsthand look at careers in excavation and the many opportunities the field offers.
Anthony began by introducing himself and sharing how he built his career and what a day in his life looks like. Beyond sharing his personal journey, Anthony gave students a clear picture of the many career pathways within excavation. He explained that individuals can start in entry-level roles and advance into positions such as equipment operators, foremen, and even business owners. He emphasized that the industry offers flexibility and growth for those willing to commit to it.
He also emphasized the skills students should be developing now to set themselves up for success. These included having a strong work ethic, being dependable, communicating effectively, working well as part of a team, and staying open to learning. He highlighted that technical skills can be taught but attitude and effort are what truly set people apart.
Anthony did not shy away from discussing the realities of the job, but he made it clear that the rewards are significant. From strong earning potential and job stability to the consistency of a schedule and the use of the newest and latest technologies.
His visit left a strong impression on the students, giving them a practical and honest look at a career path they may not have previously considered. Experiences like this help bridge the gap between the classroom and the workforce, showing students that there are many ways to build a successful and fulfilling future.
A&D Equipment is proud to support opportunities that connect industry professionals with the next generation and help inspire future leaders in construction and excavation.
Business Tips from Donna
The Power of the Google Review
Donna LaFata, owner of A&D Equipment believes that Google Reviews play a powerful role in helping businesses grow, build trust, and stand out in competitive markets. In many cases, they serve as a modern version of word-of-mouth, often being the first thing potential customers look at before deciding to make contact or a purchase.
She highlights the benefits:
-
Credibility – Positive reviews signal to prospective customers that your business is trustworthy and delivers good experience.
-
Visibility – Businesses with more reviews and higher ratings are more likely to appear in local search results, making it easier for customers to find them.
-
Customer Insight – Reviews provide direct feedback about what a business is doing well and where it can improve. This information is incredibly valuable for adjusting, refining services, and enhancing the overall customer experience.
-
Trust Signals – Reviews act as visible proof that real customers have engaged in your business, it is legitimate and have had meaningful experiences. Star ratings, detailed comments, photos, and the frequency of reviews all contribute to these trust signals.
Additionally, responding to reviews, both positive and negative, demonstrates strong customer service. It shows that the business values feedback, is engaged with its customers, and is willing to address concerns. This can even turn a negative experience into a positive impression for future customers.
At A&D, asking for a Google review is part of our work flow. Every new customer receives a flyer from us 30 days after their purchase kindly requesting a Google review. In exchange, they can choose a Visa gift card, a hoodie, or a shirt/hat combo. Ultimately, Donna believes that Google Reviews help small businesses build relationships, strengthen their reputation, and attract new customers while reinforcing loyalty with existing ones. A&D Customer Spotlight: Mulder Outdoors
At A&D Equipment, we take pride in partnering with hardworking companies that are building their businesses the right way. This month, we are proud to highlight Mulder Outdoors, a growing and highly respected landscape company that has built its success through smart decisions, hard work, and a commitment to quality.
Founded in 2013, Mulder Outdoors started with a clear vision; creating a high-quality, reputable landscape company without taking on debt. From the beginning, they committed to growing at the speed of cash flow, reinvesting profits back into the business rather than overextending financially. That disciplined approach has allowed them to prioritize long-term sustainability while steadily expanding their capabilities.
Over the past 11+ years, Mulder Outdoors has grown into a full-service design/build and maintenance company serving both residential and commercial clients. Today, their seven-person team generates approximately $2.5 million in annual revenue, all while remaining completely debt-free.
A key part of that success has been investing in technology and equipment that allows them to accomplish more with fewer people while maintaining a high-standard of workmanship. That is where A&D Equipment has been proud to support their growth.
Mulder Outdoors has utilized several A&D Equipment attachments, including the Rotastar Screening Bucket for both their excavator and skid loader. This equipment has helped them process material directly on-site, reduce hauling costs, and keep projects moving efficiently. Reliable, high performing attachments have allowed them to take on larger projects while protecting profitability and maintaining quality.
Like many forward-thinking contractors, Mulder Outdoors is always looking ahead. On their future wish list is a crushing bucket attachment to further improve efficiency and reduce labor strain on jobsites.
When asked what they value most in an equipment dealer, their answer was simple: reliability, communication, and support. They want a dealer who stands behind the products they sell, responds when needed, and helps provide real solutions. As they noted, downtime directly impacts schedules and customers, so dependable service matters.
We are honored that Mulder Outdoors has found those qualities in Donna, Anthony, and the entire A&D Equipment team. Most importantly, they describe their relationship with A&D Equipment as a true partnership, not just a transaction. That is exactly the type of relationship we strive to build with every customer.
Thank you to Mulder Outdoors for your trust, your business, and for being a tremendous example of what steady growth, smart investment, and strong partnerships can accomplish.
